Aluminium, Alzheimer's, and a Veggie Solution
There are literally hundreds of studies, dating as far back as the 1970s,
showing that high levels of aluminum in the body contribute to Alzheimer’s
disease. Therefore, many experts warn that people should avoid aluminum
in their diets.
Although there is no known cure for Alzheimer’s disease, removal
of aluminum from the diseased brain has proven to be the most successful
way to slow the progression of the disease. Vegetarians who incorporate
whole grains into their diets also get a healthy dose of silicon,
and silicon consumption has proven to be one of the most effective
ways of removing aluminum from the body. Silicon removes aluminum from
the body by promoting kidney excretion and by reducing aluminum
absorption in the digestive tract.
The typical American diet heavy in meat and dairy products is low
in silicon, whereas a vegetarian diet consisting of whole grains
is relatively high in silicon. Whole grains are naturally high in
fiber, antioxidants, and silicon, although the silicon found in
whole grains is not as readily absorbable as the silicon found in
grain-based drinks like beer. In fact, there is enough readily absorbable
silicon in two glasses of beer to remove a week’s worth of
aluminum from the body.
